Matthias Kranebitter launches a musical experiment of perception in the age of acoustic overload. Using a machine-based hearing system that analyzes ensemble sounds and everyday noises in real time, the apparent sonic chaos becomes a model for attention and selection, inspired by the “cocktail party effect.” Corie Rose Soumahs States of Intermeshing, viii. what is past is prologue combines sound and political reflection. The work illuminates the entanglement of colonial history, apocalyptic discourses, and contemporary power structures. With echoes of soul and R&B and texts by Achille Mbembé, music becomes a space for remembrance, resistance, and postcolonial liberation. In QUEE(n)R, Davor Vincze uses “Bohemian Rhapsody” as the starting point for an open improvisation. Fragments of the original are deconstructed, recombined, and kept in motion, while on a visual level, AI image generators highlight the ambiguity and queer potential of faces. A play with identities and meanings—fluid, polyphonic, and full of surprising twists. A new work by Georgia Koumará unites many of the evening’s themes. In it, the composer explores communication, empathy, and power as dynamic forces. Musical processes develop, collide, and transform one another to form a sonic network of relationships that makes social structures audible.
